| Making sure mom and dad are alright |
02/14/07 – I live in NH, my parents in FL and my sister in Montana. My mom suffers from many physical illnesses and my dad has Alzheimer's. So it is great that I can see how they look and act whenever I want.
The first story was about the recent Thanksgiving holiday. Since my family (consisting of my wife and two 8 and 10 year old boys) was not able to get down to Florida this year to visit my parents, we are using the Ojo to communicate with them on an almost daily basis, something we never used to do. For Thanksgiving I had an idea of having a virtual Thanksgiving dinner with them. They set their Ojo on it's side, as I did mine, so that we got a panoramic view of the dinner table and we proceeded to have dinner together. Since it was a hands free operation we were able to enjoy diner and not worry about position the Ojo or handing a phone off for each person to speak. After a while it was like the Ojo was never there. We shared Thanksgivings of past years and had a great time as we ate dinner.
My second story is from the recent XMAS holiday. Since my children were eager to open gifts at 6:30am, I knew my parents would not be awake for that event. So I videotaped the fit giving to play back at a later time. Once we called down to my folks on the Ojo, I set up the Ojo in front of my 52 inch TV and played back the gift opening, especially when the kids were opening up their grandparents gifts. My parents were tickled pink to see the kids excitement. My oldest son had created a 52 page book about every letter of the alphabet and what it meant for Christmas. The book was illustrated with many pictures. As my son started reading and showing each page into the Ojo, I noticed that my mom was crying. I asked her what was the matter and she said nothing, that my son reminded her of her father whom had passed away many years ago. She had pictures of her father when he was 10 years old and my son had the same look and mannerisms as her dad. My son proceeded to go through all 52 pages. It lit up my parents faces, especially my dad whom has trouble remembering things because of this Alzheimer's. He still talks about that moment months later. So because of the Ojo and its visual presentation/affect, it must have sparked something in my dad for him to remember this.
